Cristiano Ronaldo came under fire from the football world after he stormed down the tunnel shortly before the final whistle in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham on Wednesday, 19 October 2022.
Cristiano Ronaldo storms down the tunnel: Here’s what we know
At Old Trafford, goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes all but sealed a victory, but Ronaldo was not satisfied. He had been sitting on the bench up until that point, and in the 90th minute, he started down the tunnel with four mins of injury time still to play.
However, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag still had two substitutions left at the time. Ten Hag only brought on Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, and Elanga.
As per New24, Ten Hag insisted that he would “deal with” the player on Thursday. The Dutch coach will understandably be miffed that the story has overshadowed a commanding victory. The Red Devils boss also refused to confirm if Ronaldo had been given permission to leave early after the game.
“I don’t pay attention to that, I will deal with that tomorrow. I want to keep the focus on the team, it was a magnificent performance from all the 11 players,” Erik said.
“I am pleased with that. I will not say I am satisfied because good is not good enough, that has to be the standard at Manchester United,” he added.
Additionally, Ronaldo did not even go back to the locker room. Instead, it’s reported he abruptly left the stadium before the final whistle was sounded.
Last season, Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel a few times after United had dropped points, including against Everton, Newcastle, and Aston Villa. He also received criticism for slamming a fan’s phone out of their hands.
United currently sits at number five on the log with 19 points. The Red Devils are set to take on Chelsea on Saturday, 22 October 2022, at Stamford Bridge.
The public reacts to Ronald’s sulk
On social media, his actions sparked a contentious discussion. While some felt Ronaldo was justified in taking action after being “disrespected” by Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag, others criticized him. Here’s what they had to say:
